Senior Associate, Construction

The Team

Our Middle East Projects & Construction group has seven partners, one legal director, six senior associates, eight associates and three trainees / paralegals across the firm’s offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh. Since being established more than 20 years ago, it has grown to become the largest construction group in the region and has been consistently recognised by independent legal directories as being the best over many years. This means that the group acts for employers, contractors and consultants on the region’s most high profile and complex projects.

Our team operates on a pooled-resource basis, with lawyers having the opportunity to work with any of our partners across all of our offices. While most of our lawyers are based in Dubai, any of our lawyers may find themselves working on transactions or disputes for clients in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and beyond.

We also tailor the staff allocated to particular matters, meaning that partners may be supervising a sole lawyer or teams of up to six lawyers, depending on the scale and nature of the work required. Such matters range from drafting contracts and advising on procurement matters, negotiating and concluding contracts, advising on claims / risk management issues and giving project counsel support, through to managing formal dispute resolution processes (including local court litigation and domestic and international arbitration).

The Role

We are look for a Senior Associate to join our Dubai or Abu Dhabi office. Specifically, we would like to add capacity to our “senior bench” of lawyers that are running disputes, including arbitration seated in the UAE and other Middle East jurisdictions. The Senior Associate will work directly with clients under minimal supervision from partners and manage associates as appropriate.

Transactional experience will be regarded favourably but is not required.

Key Responsibilities

  • to manage a caseload of mainly contentious construction matters
  • to assist Partners in delegation of work to and supervision of juniors in team
  • to work closely with clients and continually developing the aptitude to foster long term client relationships
  • to actively participate in practice group business development

Candidate Requirements

  • strong academic background
  • at least 6+ years construction experience gained at a reputable law firm with a strong reputation in the field of construction disputes
  • proven track record in taking a lead role in complex and high value dispute
  • arbitration experience preferred but not essential
  • a willingness to assume responsibility and take a pro-active and commercial approach to issue
  • a real interest in marketing/business development and the ability to foster long term relationships
  • an ability to work in a team and autonomously
  • drive, enthusiasm and flexibility

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Working knowledge of legal / contractual issues that commonly arise on construction disputes
  • Working knowledge of dispute resolution processes and the preparation of cases before relevant decision-making bodies

Mid Level Associate – Corporate

The ideal candidate will have a strong corporate background, gained within a large-scale international or regional top tier firm. Due to the varied diet of corporate work we have to offer, applicants will have a broad background encompassing M&A and JV deals, foreign direct investment (FDI) and corporate structuring.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare and draft legal corporate documents, including SPAs, JVAs, APAs and other commercial/ transaction ancillary documents;
  • Supervise and manage due diligence and disclosure exercises;
  • Support on M&A/JV deals, and assist with FDI matters;
  • Work on broader commercial matters as required;
  • Ensure all contribution to projects are executed in accordance with the firm’s methodologies, guidance, and professional standards;
  • Contribute to the firm’s know how and precedents system;
  • Participate in the business development activities of the corporate team; and
  • Contribute to the growth of the team by ensuring client matters are worked on in an efficient manner.

Essential Skills & Experience

The ideal applicant will:

  • be a qualified lawyer with a 2:1 (or higher) degree classification (or equivalent) attained from a reputed academic institution;
  • 3-5 years post qualification experience as a corporate lawyer gained within recognised international law firms;
  • be common law qualified or admitted as a solicitor within a commonwealth jurisdiction;
  • draft structurally consistent and clear legal documents in English;
  • have experience in M&A/ JV deals in a lead support role and supervisory role for due diligence and disclosure exercises;
  • possess prior experience of working within the Middle East region would be viewed as an advantage
  • fluency in Arabic (written and spoken) ideal, but not essential
  • have a genuine interest in developing a long-term career within the Middle East
  • have a mature and flexible personality; use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems;
